Life, Oh Life

February 13, 2017 • Leave a Comment

This is a non-bookish entry but something I want to share so…

Dear younglings (thanks for the term Bianca Mori),

Looking around, being with people, I see the extreme importance of learning all you can while you can, especially life skills. Learn these skills not because you should not need to seek help from others, but because the reality is, there won’t always be others who will have the patience for you, who you can rely on, who is willing to be at your disposal. Learn all you must because you don’t want to be a sad, limp individual who can’t advance because you chose to believe there’s always someone to get you out of your rut and clean up your mess for you.

Please don’t want to be that someone who can’t advance because you thought you won’t need this and that. That by the time you realize you do need those certain mundane skills, there’d have been too much going on for you to wrap your head around the new developments.

Embrace change. Embrace learning. Embrace advancement. Learn to fly on your own. Don’t wait for others to build your wings for you because honestly? You already have them. All you need is to unfurl them and start flapping. Harness the wind and your confidence and soar high.

Be an individual. Be a confident individual.

Print books, February events, writing updates

January 27, 2017 • Leave a Comment

Okay, so I haven’t been updating my blog. It’s difficult when I always have to rely on mobile data and going out to a cafe means I have to spend more than I’m willing to spend for a meal and some time to hang out and work. But I gotta do what I gotta do so I’m doing a post that more or less covers what I’ve been up to.

MY PRINT BOOKS ARE OUT IN THE WILD!

The biggest downside, to my mind, of being indie pubbed is finding an outlet to sell print versions of my book. Fortunately, I found a few that accept consignment deals. So these places are where you can find print copies of my book Of Love And Special Things:

Address: Scout Rallos, Diliman, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines Phone: +63 2 994 0437

Address: 121 Paseo de Roxas, Legaspi Village, Makati, 1229 Metro Manila, Philippines Phone: +63 2 625 0305

Thank you to 8Letters for facilitating the distribution of my books to above outlets!

Also, find my books at Blacksoup Cafe + Artspace on 154 Maginhawa, Diliman, QC and over at Re:Verb Creative Arts Studio, Wilson cor. P. Guevarra Streets, San Juan.

FEBRUARY THINGS

First of all, there’s this…

And then there’s also this

And I’m attending both. That’s for my indie life.

On the other hand, there’s also this come Valentine’s Day for My Special Valentine…

because MSV is celebrating 25 years in the publishing biz! Yay!

#AMWRITING

I am part of #romanceclass2017 and I am … uhm… well, I have the story down in my head. Promise! And I’ll have it ready come deadline on February 28th. Yep! Really.

Also doing a short story for a summer anthology call. Deadline is also on February 28th. I’m crazy, right? Because I am accepting editing jobs, too. Hahahahaha.

There’s a host of other writing goals I have set for myself this year and I will try to fill everyone in on it as the days roll along. 😉

That’s about it for now. Imma go back to work.

Dear 2016

December 24, 2016 • Leave a Comment

Hi! In about a week, you’ll be saying goodbye. I have to be honest that for the most part, you sucked big time. I dunno if you hold something against humanity (and I think you’d be justified to do so seeing as humans have not been human for the past years), but in my personal life, I still have so much to be thankful for.

Let me start at the beginning…

In January, I bid goodbye to my precious Apostolos, my Akri. For those of you who do not know, Apostolos was my Ford Ranger, one of five grand prizes which I won at a raffle in 2014. I was sad to let my ride go, but the new owner is a friend and I still get to borrow Akri for long drives.

Having sold him (I know vehicles are usually gendered female but I prefer my stuff to be male), I had enough money to pay for stuff. Bought my new laptop, Aricles, and my new tab, Joshua.

coverMy first crime novella came out in a bundle on Buqo! I was one of sixteen authors who finished the crime writing online class held in October the previous year. As of this writing, ten of us have been able to publish our stories as standalones, launching our books six months later – in June.

February was fun and full of adventure. Canyoneering in Alegria, a trip to Apo Island to swim with the turtles, Bais and Manjuyod, and up to the Twin Lakes. What was more fun? The friends who shared the adventures with me.

March was more quiet. I welcomed Queng’s Theater Center team to Dumaguete, playing host and tour guide for them. Oh, and Pam was with them for the first two days, too. Went to Apo Island again, and to Bais to see the dolphins.

I’m skipping April (nothing too exciting there) to move on to May – another fun month (except for the Elections, which … ugh… I don’t want to go into that). I was with a set of newfound friends from the RWP and #romanceclass community. Swimming and sunning ourselves, gorging on glorious food, and just lazing about.

June reunited me with my bro and his family. I have missed the kids so much and spending time with them for the brief vacation they had, plus my niece celebrating her birthday here, was precious. Looking back, it now has a more precious meaning because it was the last time Nanay was able to go out with us.

Month-end, #HeistClub authors launched our standalone crime novellas in both print and as ebooks. Yay!

#HeistClub authors at the launch

July was pivotal. I’d forgotten what the exact date was but I woke up one morning to a Viber message (or was it an email?) from my Mom. She was screaming (yes, I heard her voice) and ecstatic. My immigration papers were finally being processed for visa issuance! So much yaaaayyyy!!!!

Will skip August again and move on to September for the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) yaayyy! I wasn’t part of the usual MSV meet n greet. I had no new book and my manuscript for the collaboration didn’t make it to the deadline. But thanks to the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), indie writers and publishers got a booth for selling! Wheee! First time for me to be at the fair for all 5 days! And get this, I got interviewed on ABS-CBN’s Bandila (evening news), ran for about ten minutes, aired for about 5 seconds.

Also in September, my grandmother celebrated her 95th birthday. Funny that whenever she was asked, she’d say 92. And when I corrected her, she said she was trying to pass herself off as younger than her age. Oh, Nanay. Little did we know, or maybe I did, I felt it. It would be her last birthday on earth.

Crispina Sanicasio Gervacio-Segura 26 Sept. 1921 – 10 Nov. 2016

October is my birth month and I celebrated by spending a week in Bali. Glorious, beautiful, breathtaking, awesome Bali. I was joined by BFF Queng for the first few days, then I was on my own. Then there was the birthday surprise. I might have mentioned I’d be celebrating my birthday but I wasn’t expecting the staff of Dewangga Bungalow to give me a birthday cake. So grateful, and so happy.

Oohhh! And then there was #FeelsFest! Woot! Launched a new book – an anthology of short stories here.

ofloveandspecialthings

November was hard. Nanay left us. Although we lost her, I believe there was still so much to be thankful for. She lived a full life. She was ready. She made sure we were ready as well. Or as ready as we ever could be. We bid her goodbye at noon on a Thursday.

I love you forever, Nanay.

And then there’s December. Busy working on two manuscripts – one in English and one in Filipino. So I think I might be driving myself a bit crazy there.

That was my year. And as we go into the final stretch before we welcome 2017, I lift up my prayers and wishes.

First of all, thank you, Lord, for every opportunity to grow, all those moments of joy, each sacrifice that made me a better person. Thank you for family and friends who are there, who will always be there. Thank you for those who came and went, they brought valuable lessons for me to learn from.

I pray for peace, for healing, for your guiding light, for strength, for hope, for all. As we go into the new year, may we remember and cherish this life that we have. This life with which to give glory and honor.

Dear 2016, you dealt a heavy blow. But yeah, as far as I’m concerned, there is still so much I am thankful for.

Looking forward to 2017. Bring it on!

SETTLE THE SCORE

College senior Garnet Figueroa lives and breathes basketball. A reliable asset to her varsity team, she is equipped with the skills and smarts to get the De La Sierra Lady Hunters closer to this year’s championship title. But Garnet soon finds out that her good friend (and long-time crush), cheerdancer Charles Crisostomo, is being cheated on by his girl, and she lets her emotions get the best of her.

Will she be able to come up with a game plan to save herself from heartbreak before the buzzer signals Game Over?

EXCERPT

Freshman year.

I spent a stupid amount of time on the wrong side of campus and was already running late for orientation. As I brisk-walked to the Liberal Arts Building, someone in a green shirt sped past, bringing a quick gust of wind that effectively snatched my enrollment form from my fingers. I cursed when it flew up in the air, but the Flash suddenly turned around and helped me retrieve the piece of paper.

“Sorry ’bout that. Running late.” He handed me my enrollment form, and I took it. Only he didn’t let go just yet. He tilted his head and narrowed his eyes at the sheet. I gave it a tug, and he let go.

“Sorry. I just realized we’re in the same block.”

“LA29?”

“Yeah.” He jerked his head forward. “Want to go together? I’m still unfamiliar with the campus.”

I tucked the form between the pages of a book I carried. “As am I.”

“So let’s go?”

I began walking again, checking my watch as I did. We were already five minutes late.

“I’m Charles, by the way,” he said when he caught up with me by the entrance of the Liberal Arts Building.

“Garnet.”

I noticed how our footsteps were in stride as we went up the stairs and how he was wearing classic and completely worn Chuck Taylors that were the same color as his shirt. “You must really like being a Sierran,” I commented.

“It’s a family thing.”

“Ah.”

“You?”

“Scholarship,” I answered curtly as we got up to the third floor. Only a few strides away, Charles went ahead and opened the door to 315, then stepped back to let me in.

Having studied in an all-girls school from elementary to high school, this was entirely new to me. I stared at him for a second, and he did the same, unsure what to do next.

He cleared his throat and then tilted his head toward the open door. “Ladies first?”

“Oh. Thanks—you. I mean, thank you.”

My little speech blunder left him grinning, making me drop my head in embarrassment as I entered the room. He sat beside me the entire day and even took the opportunity to remind me of my mistake when I lent him a pen.

“Thanks you.”

I frowned and tried to snatch the pen away, but he was too quick.

“What kind of college student doesn’t bring a pen to school?”

“The Crisostomo kind,” came his casual reply. He scribbled something in his notebook, and the smirk he had revealed a dimple on his left cheek. That annoyed me for some reason.

How I was utterly convinced Charles and I would never be friends is still beyond me.

HUSTLE PLAY

Running on pure adrenaline and working with game strategies is something a basketball player like Garnet Figueroa is trained for. On the court, she is unbeatable. Off the court… that’s a completely different story.

Because falling in love is trickier than a ball game, and Garnet finds herself fumbling over her feelings for Charles Crisostomo. The fact that her attention gets divided between him and rival school hard-court hottie Chris Barcelo doesn’t help.

Or does it?

EXCERPT

Shoot day, one week later.

As Kevin Chan, our photographer for the day, showed Chris Barcelo and me several photo pegs for the shoot, I started to panic. The poses looked so… intimate. Like a set of basketball-themed pre-nuptial photos.

My anxiety might have been palpable because Avenida’s star player gently pulled me to the side and gave me a quick pep talk. He said something about being comfortable with him and trusting him. Maybe something about listening to the photographer’s instructions too. I wasn’t so sure. The damn studio lights behind Chris made him glow like an otherworldly being, and it became difficult to focus on two things at a time.

A beat later, Chris’ fingers were wrapped firmly around my wrist as he tugged me toward the studio floor.

“Relax,” Kevin said. “This is a piece of cake.”

No shit, I cursed in my head. This might be a walk in the park for Chris, who has been doing this since he was a rookie—but me? Have they seen my action shots from news articles?

Kevin started us off with something relatively easy. “Play ball,” he said as his assistant tossed Chris a basketball. In the small space provided, Chris and I pretended to play against each other. I dribbled the ball and Chris tried to steal it, and vice versa. I took an imaginary shot and Chris tried to block it, and then we switched roles. Because it was something I was used to doing, it came to me naturally.

But when we began with the couple-y poses, I grew stiff. One of these required Chris to “hug” me from behind, attempting to steal the ball in my hands. It should look like we were playfully fighting over the ball, but I must’ve looked so awkward that Kevin couldn’t find a nice shot in all thirty or so clicks I’d heard. I worried he was getting exasperated even if he was still being so nice about it.

“Pretend I’m telling you a joke,” Chris said, his voice in my ear sending good shivers down my spine. We were still posing for the camera.

“What joke?”

“Any joke. What do you find funny?”

Thoughts of Charles filled my head. One way or another, the two of us were able to find humor in anything and everything if we wanted to. Like his tight cheer outfits I teased him about or those unfortunate game photos of myself on Internet articles looking like I’d dozed off, snoring, while taking a midair jumper. Sometimes we laughed over the most trivial things, leaving Justine and Colby scratching their heads and wondering if we were still sane.

I let out a soft laugh.

“Yes, Ms. Figueroa? Mind sharing it with the class?” The amusement in Chris’ voice was unmistakable.

“I just remembered the silly things my friend and I laugh about all the time.”

“That’s great!” Kevin called out. Both Chris and I turned our heads toward him. “No, no. Carry on.” His hands motioned for us to keep going. “You’re looking more natural, you’re getting it!”

From that point on, everything felt easier. We talked and joked around as we shifted to more poses. I realized then that Chris was as goofy as he was charming. I couldn’t stop laughing with him until after we were done.

“Hey, how about that—we make a great team!” Chris mused aloud as we checked the photos on Kevin’s laptop. The photographer agreed and made a comment about how some of the shots were cover-photo material.

I smiled. “Yeah, I guess so.”

Chris held his hand up near my face, and I stared at it dumbly for a few seconds before raising my own hand for a weak high five. He laughed and egged me on. “Oh, come on, Figueroa, you can do better than that!” His hand was still raised, though I could tell he was steeling it for a harder slap.

I obliged. He shook his hand in the air loosely afterward, but he continued laughing. “Knew you had it in you. Ouch.”

Kevin thanked us for our time and shook our hands before letting us go. On the way back to the holding rooms, Chris asked if I wanted to have lunch with him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, why not? You’re my magazine girlfriend now, and your magazine boyfriend wants a date.”

Good lord. Are those butterflies in my stomach?
