The 37th MIBF and Craft Central

September 22, 2016 • Leave a Comment

So, the past few days had been crazy fun. The Manila International Book Fair was an event I looked forward to yearly for the books (!) and for the reader-writer Meet n Greet mini-event by my beloved publisher Bookware. This year, though, as I had no new title under My Special Valentine, I wasn’t part of the signing session although I did promise EJ followers, fellow authors, and my MSV bosses that I’d drop by. Drop by only because I was required by a work contract to be elsewhere. Whew. I’m not really busy. *wink*

Anyway, the more exciting part this time around, at least for me, was having booth to showcase our indie books! Yay! Many thanks to the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) for sponsoring the space and letting us share shelves with other exceptional indie authors/collectives during those five days.

That's me! And the peeps from Uno Morato and Lira

Our side of the booth featured books from #romanceclass, #HeistClub and #StrangeLit. Fellow authors shared duties in manning the inventory and playing cashier and selling ‘kalandian, krimen at kababalaghan‘ alongside the Tagalog poetry books from the other side.

The five days were tiring, but also really lots of fun! Oh, and another highlight of the event? This on the first night:

I happened to be the only one left in the booth and Mina surprised me with a call that led to the interview. It was aired over that evening’s news, Bandila. 😉

At the end of five days, we managed to sell about 500 books, 17 of which are mine (Classified)! Woot woot! I can also proudly say only about five of the 17 were bought by people I knew! Ahhh, I remember the kilig moment when, while a potential buyer, a complete stranger, reads the blurb, and you’re silently sitting there and uttering ‘please please please buy my book’ in your head, and s/he actually does, you do a little dance of joy.

Speaking of , and the rest of #HeistClub, of course, we are now available at The Craft Central! Yay again!

And look! There we are!

I see Classified somewhere there. 😉

That about wraps up this post. Will be going to the opening weekend happenings at The Craft Central on October 1, 5 to 7 PM. Hope you can drop by!

That’s the Philippine Educational Theater Association, not the animal rights group. 😉

Okay, just a quick rundown of the exciting things to expect from this excellent theater group.

In April 2016, Precious Pages Corp., the publisher of Precious Hearts Romances, called on amateur filmmakers nationwide to participate in this momentous project. A total of 40 applicants, from students to film enthusiasts sent in their portfolio in the hopes of being able to enter the competition. Ten out of the 40 were shortlisted. They chose from a selection of PHR titles on which they formulated a film concept as out-of-the-box as they could while still maintaining the romantic personality that Precious Hearts Romances has embodied. From their pitches, five applicants and a ‘wild card’ were granted a much-coveted spot. Each were given P15,000 to produce their respective films by August 12, 2016.

About the Takedown Trilogy

Follow the trail of one extraordinary woman with a special set of skills and a past both mysterious and painful in the Takedown Trilogy, a romantic suspense tale of thrilling twists and a whole lot of steam.

Watch the action as it jets from a lush tropical island in the midst of a tempest, springtime in Amsterdam, a sticky Barcelona sojourn to a final assault in a posh London neighborhood. Meet the cast of characters: a Frenchman bent on payback. The aristocrat with a score to settle. A distant father and demanding boss. The cop who needs her. And the equally mysterious, equally skilled man drawn to her against both their better judgments.

First time in paperback
For the first time in print, all three books of the romantic suspense Takedown series will be published in one paperback! The books are:

BOOK 1: IN TOO DEEP  |  BOOK 2: PEYTON RILEY |  BOOK 3: SCORCHED EARTH

To order your own copy, email thebiancamori@gmail.com. Price is Php350.

SERENDIPITYRead them anywhere
The Takedown books have been previously exclusively available on Amazon only. Starting August 21, they will be released in various ebook formats and platforms, including Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. Go to Smashwords.com for In Too Deep, Peyton Riley and Scorched Earth in your preferred ebook format!

Praise for the Takedown Trilogy

“If In Too Deep was summer fling, sexy trysts and gorgeous island, Peyton Riley is full on bad-assery.” – Jay E. Tria, author of Songs of our Break Up and Blossom Among Flowers

“Action, intrigue, gorgeous European settings and a redhead? Count. Me. In.” – Carla de Guzman, author of Cities and Marry Me, Charlotte B!

“The third and longest book in Bianca Mori’s Takedown series, Scorched Earth also happens to be the best…A must-read for fans of romantic suspense.” – Liana Smith Bautista, blogger, Will Read For Feels

Read about Bianca’s thoughts on the Trilogy and being a romance author...

ITD quoteIs this a project you’ve always wanted to write?

Book 2, Peyton Riley, opens with an interrogation scene that had been in the back of my head for some time. There’s even a bit of dialogue between the leads that I remember scribbling wayyy back – the part about “thrown in health and dental and this could be a 9-5 job.” So I’ve always had the idea of writing a badass, smartass female character. I just needed a plot for her to live in!

What was your inspiration in coming up with the concept for your story?

It really just sort of happened when I was coming up with a contribution to the Love’s A Beach bundle (which eventually became In Too Deep). I was thinking that a straight romance plot set in a beach seemed a little expected, and I wanted to spice things up with my story. So I thought, what if both MC and LI weren’t what they seemed? Why would they need to have different identities? Were they hiding? Why? And it snowballed from there. Before long I had the whole plot sketched out for a planned Trilogy. At that time I happened to catch The Losers on the bus during my work commute and I just got a kick out of the action in that movie (and Chris Evans hehe) so I think that influenced my plot outline a lot. (Of course the funny thing was that I got some bad reviews on that bundle because In Too Deep ends in a cliffhanger and it wasn’t what people were expecting! So lesson learned in marketing: never do a plot switcheroo. People want to read what they signed up for!)

PR quoteDo you identify with the lead? Why or why not?

Hehe. I kind of do. I’m an INTJ and I tend to detach when processing or evaluating information or making decisions — I’ve been called pragmatic at best (unfeeling at worst). The lead in The Takedown Trilogy has that detachment going for her too; in fact it’s a major source of conflict between her and Carson the LI in book 2, Peyton Riley. But if you read closely you’ll see she has a lot of anxiety, a lot of internalized turmoil just under the surface. I relate to that too — I place a lot of value on self control that people don’t know I’m going nuts under the surface already!

SE quoteWhat are the common difficulties (in the process of writing) you encounter as an author of romance?

For me I always worry if I’m doing the romance justice. I can write “sawi” / unrequited love / loss well, but when it comes to kilig, to developing the attraction between my leads, so that its organic and unforced? I feel like I’m constantly balancing between too much (corny / cheesy) or too little (no chemistry). I also struggle with HEAs because of this!

What is the best part of being a romance author?

It’s a powerful thing, being able to evoke powerful feelings in people. I guess it’s easier to scare or disgust a person than to make them relive their happiest memories of love — or desire or attraction. Being able to do that, in however small way, is awesome. ?

BLOG TOUR: When Sparks Fly by Ines Bautista-Yao

WHEN SPARKS FLY

by Ines Bautista-Yao

Genre: Sweet Romance

Available on Amazon

Twenty-four-year-old photographer’s apprentice Regina has always felt like the plain, dull orange next to the shiny red apple that is her best friend Lana. But then she meets Ben—the first guy to ever break Lana’s heart, and the first guy to ever make Regina feel that he only has eyes for her. As Regina finds herself falling hard for Ben, she also finds herself breaking all the rules of best-friendship. Will she give up the love of her life for Lana, or will she finally realize that she deserves her share of the spotlight, too?

EXCERPT

IMG_5269There was a slight commotion by the entrance of the dark studio as a few guys in what looked like different kinds of Nike shirts walked in. The ubiquitous swoosh (or what Regina called the check mark) gave them away. They headed straight for the throng around the makeup chairs and began chattering with the players. Since she had nothing to do, Regina watched them. They were probably sponsors and wanted to make sure the players wore their clothes and no other brand. She rolled her eyes. How was this even relevant when they were hardly going to be clothed?

“You look like you’re hard at work.”

“You know how it is,” she mumbled, thinking it was one of the magazine editors or advertising executives she had met earlier. Her eyes were still on the guys who had just entered.

“Hi, Regina.”

That made her look up. Goodness, what was he doing here? Her heart began to hammer in her chest.

“Ben.”

“It’s great to see you.” His eyes crinkled up when he smiled. He was in another long-sleeved dress shirt, a light pink one this time, and dark pants. His tie was a no-nonsense striped one, unlike the printed ones she was seeing more and more often on the corporate guys who hired Paulo.

She shook her head, leaning as far away from him as possible as he pulled up a plastic chair. “No, you’re not hanging out here with me,” she protested. “I’m getting ready for the shoot.”

He tilted his head for a few seconds, plopped himself down on the chair, and bent forward—close enough for her to see that his eyes were dark brown with flecks of gold. Or was that just the light coming from the makeup mirrors? Probably. It wasn’t like he was part vampire or something. “Yeah, you look really busy.”

“I am! I have to…” She couldn’t think of a single thing to say. Even the stupid box of Polaroids mocked her by just resting in her hand.

“You have nothing better to do. So why not just kill time with me?” He grinned. Then she saw him swallow and take a deep breath as if psyching himself up for something. “So, did you get my message?”

With a little sigh, Regina decided to ease her grip on the brick wall she’d conjured up around her heart. She didn’t have the energy to fight it anymore. Not after all those nights of cramming senseless cartoons and TV shows into her brain to push thoughts of him away. Not after berating herself for not being able to forget someone she had talked to for what wasn’t even a few minutes. Not with him sitting this close.

Putting the Polaroid box down, she turned her whole body to face him. She studied his expression. He looked confident, which was what she had noticed the first time they’d met. But there was something behind that playful, carefree grin. Was it actually vulnerability? She wanted to find out. Or at least, that was the excuse she gave herself.

“Yes, and I threw it away. Is that how you usually get the girls? By scribbling your number on a coffee cup?”

He closed his eyes and winced. “No it’s …”

She waited, crossing her arms, knowing all she had to do was keep her mouth shut and the truth was bound to come out.

“All right, it’s worked before,” he admitted with a shrug.

“So it’s one of your methods.”

“Look, Regina, I’m really sorry about Lana. But I made it clear from the start that we were just hanging out. She was the one who started talking about forever. Believe me, I quickly corrected her and she seemed to understand.”

Regina narrowed her eyes. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe him so badly. He looked so frustrated, open, sincere, and…cute. There it was. Her remaining hold on that brick wall crumbled. “Fine. I believe you. Lana can be a bit, uh, over the top sometimes.”

He broke into a huge smile. “Yes! I didn’t want to say anything, I know she’s your friend—”

“Best friend,” Regina corrected.

“Best friend.” He nodded, contrite. “But I did not lead her on. I didn’t even, well, you know.”

Regina tilted her head. “No, I don’t.”

His cheeks reddened. “Uh, nothing. So aren’t you wondering what I’m doing here?”

“Okay. What are you doing here?” Regina didn’t want to hear the details about him and Lana anyway.

“I actually have to interview a few of the players. I need some inside info for the game tomorrow and I want to be ready. Besides, a shoot like this is always something fun to add when there’s nothing else to talk about.”

Regina frowned. “What game? You stalk players because you need conversation topics when you pick up girls? That’s pathetic, Ben.”

His laugh was warm and loud. “No! I need it when I describe basketball games as they unfold. Makes things more interesting to have tidbits of information if it gets boring. You never know.”

“You describe games.”

“On TV!” He beamed, his chest thrusting out a little.

Regina couldn’t help the grin that broke her guarded countenance. “So you’re a sportscaster, is that what you’ve been trying to tell me? Or did you think I already knew that because you think being on TV makes you a celebrity?”

“No, of course not!” But he looked guilty. It dawned on her that besides his good looks and his charm, being a TV personality—even a mini one—could be a big draw for most girls. But see, she wasn’t like most girls. He’d have to try harder than that. But then again, that meant she wasn’t shutting the door on him. She was letting him try. Against her better judgment. Against all the rules of best friendship. “But I was….hoping you knew. At the very least it’s something I could impress you with.”

His smile was genuine. He was making fun of himself now. And Regina’s heart melted. She didn’t fall for the celebrity. But the celebrity (okay, miniscule celebrity) who had the confidence to mock his status? Well, that was another story.

THE AUTHOR:
FullSizeRenderReading and writing are close to Ines Bautista Yao’s heart ever since she was a child. She graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in AB Communication Arts. She has been a teacher at the Assumption College San Lorenzo and the Ateneo de Manila University’s English department.

Her debut novel One Crazy Summer was first penned in 2007 when she was pregnant with her first daughter Addie. Being a mother has taken much of Ines’ time so she was only able to write 13 pages of her novel. She completed her story in April 2011, while three-year-old Addie was sleeping and inspiration struck her again. Two months later her story was complete. After eight months, her dream of publishing her own book came true. The book was only launched last January 26, 2012, but Ines is already writing her second novel.

Most readers can remember Ines as the former editor-in-chief of K-Zone Magazine and Candy Magazine . At present, Ines is working as an editor of Summit Books. She is also married to photographer Marc Yao, whom she says she consults whenever she’s stuck in the middle of a story she’s writing.

I Must Have Done Something Good

August 11, 2016 • Leave a Comment

I believe I’d written about this some time ago. About my greatest fear as a writer. The realization came after a friend told me how, while she was fixing her bookshelf, skimmed over several books from a series she painstakingly saved up for and tried to complete when she was much younger. She said after rereading some of the stories, she experienced what could only be described as a WTF moment: WTF was I thinking that time that I actually liked this story?

Oh, dear.

Those words, in turn, triggered something in my brain and defined the worst fear I (or maybe any other writer) could ever experience – a loyal reader’s WTF moment, and subsequent desire to get rid of the books.

So, I said (something like) I wasn’t afraid of running out of ideas. I wasn’t afraid of not becoming a bestselling author. I wasn’t afraid of not having bajillions of fans. I would understand no longer being able to fully relate with a story because they’d outgrown the trope. But please, not a WTF moment.

What I wanted then, what I had come to wish for was simple: If and when, in the future, any one of my readers go back and reread (or recall) any of my old titles, I wish with all my heart that it would be with fond recollection of kilig moments.

And waking up to this post on Twitter was a wish granted.

something good

My very first published novel in 2003 was an amateur’s attempt at writing a story and yet it was picked up and loved, and loved throughout time.

Thanks, April! You made my day. Oh, and I’m really sorry (#notsorry) I broke your heart and made you cry. (“,)
