I love food! and I love my kitchen.

November 18, 2012 • Leave a Comment

If you see me, you’ll know why. I’m overweight. har har! I also love cooking but only when I have visitors because I find it too tedious to cook only for myself. I end up eating the same dish over and over for a week. ew.

So anyway, I’m best at concocting pasta dishes not necessarily my original recipes but I can come up with the ingredients when I taste something from restos.

Disney’s Lady and the Tramp

I’d like to share some of the dishes I like doing, for your eating pleasure. 😉

tuna mushroom in olive oil

saute canned tuna (either regular or hot and spicy) in garlic and onions, add mushroom (pieces and stem), corn kernels, sprinkle with basil (mccormick will do, if fresh leaves are not available). optional if you want to put black olives and capers.

if you prefer cream-based sauce. add a can (or one sachet, dissolved in water) of mushroom soup. bring to a boil before serving.

chili-garlic with basil

heat oil, saute garlic, add teaspoon of chili flakes (or less, depending on your tolerance for spice), sprinkle with dry basil. and it’s ready to serve!

aligue (crab fat) and garlic

saute garlic, add aligue paste, plenty of olives and capers

broccoli and sun-dried tomato

prepare dried preserved tomatoes according to package suggestion or use the bottled kind in olive oil as is. blanch your broccoli buds with boiling water.

saute garlic in oil, add the broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes, toss in your pasta. and that’s it!

hungarian sausage with sun-dried tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes, if you prefer)

saute garlic, add sliced sausages, fry lightly. add the tomatoes. note: please use large tomatoes or you can use cherry tomatoes.

shrimp scampi

melt butter in slightly heated olive oil, lightly brown garlic. add shrimps, drizzle with fresh lemon juice, toss in your pasta and sprinkle with chopped parsley and parmesan cheese and chili flakes.

Oh, if you notice, there are no measurements? Sorry, that’s how I cook. I just look and see and smell and taste. What kind of pasta noodles to use? Whatever you like. Personally, I prefer the short ones – penne, twists, vegeroni shapes. Don’t like spaghetti or angel hair noodles but I’m fine with linguine or fettuccine.

Don’t forget, these pasta dishes are perfect with generous sprinklings of parmesan cheese. And chili flakes if you like spice.

Enjoy cooking! and eating!

Romance Lit 101

or What you need to understand about Tagalog Romance

hmm… come to think of it, this doesn’t just apply to Tagalog Romance. it applies to the genre.

let me qualify, too, these are not gospel truths. these are just my thoughts, inferred from being exposed to the realm of this particular type of pop literature.

ImageBELIEF: Romance novels are a girl thing.

FACT: While it’s true that majority of the readers are women, it’s not to say that men do not read them or will never read them or will not have any appreciation for them if and when they do read them.

BELIEF: Tagalog romance are for economic class lower B, C, D and E thing just as English romance are for Class A and upper and middle B.

FACT: Romance novels whether English or Tagalog traverses all classes. It does not follow that since Tagalog Romance novels are priced such that readers belonging to the C, D and E economic bracket can afford them, these readers are automatically labeled baduy.

Oh, and FYI, economic bracket does not equate being baduy or sosyal. So if you’re pang-masa, it only means you’re mainstream. Nothing wrong with it, nothing to be embarrassed about.

BELIEF: Romance novels are predictable.

FACT: This is true and there is a very good reason why. Romance, by its nature, follows a given formula. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, they separate due to a conflict, and they get back together and live happily ever after. Romantic plots, too, are very limited. There are but seven (7) main plots that the multitude of writers work with. Definitely, there will be similarities. The challenge for every writer is to create unique scenes that will bring his/her characters from one level to the next. This is what makes the stories interesting. Or boring.

BELIEF: Love stories and romance are one and the same.

FACT: Every romance story is a love story but not all love stories are romance stories. Love stories have a wider scope which includes having a non-happy ending. Romance stories always have a happy ending. For more explanation on why such is true for romance stories, see fact about predictability.

Any more thoughts?

The Day I Got Bullied Into Writing a Story

November 12, 2012 • Leave a Comment

I’d been on a slump at the time. Then I get this YM from bff Queng and she demanded I start writing. She said,

Write something about a writer who can’t write, and I dunno, a has-been director who’s been laid off and make the story something like Music and Lyrics. I will check back with you in two hours, I want to see something.

Talk about bullying…

It paid off, ya know. It’s lined up for release soon, of course, from MSV. 🙂

The story of Gerardo and Mikaela:

“So what do you do for a living?” narinig ni Gerardo na tanong ni Mikaela habang naglalakad sila at may tulak na tig-isang shopping cart sa aisle sa grocery store.
Sumulyap siya rito. “I used to be a director.”
“Used to be?” “In between jobs ka ngayon? Nag-try ka lang sa directing, you mean?”
“Baka mag-retire na ako kung walang darating na project within the next few months.”
“Teka, retire?” Lalong nagsalubong ang kilay nito. “But you don’t look old enough to retire… Director ka ba ng ano? Sa stage?”
“Sa TV, saka movies,” pagtatama niya.
“Talaga?”
“Maraming beses.” Tinitigan niya ang hilera ng cup noodles.
“Oh, my God!
Maybe he owed her that.
“That… sucks,” anito.
“Yeah,” aniya. “That’s showbiz.”
I think masyado akong vulnerable for that.”
“Not my editor.” Umiling nito.
“Writer ka?” May paghanga sa tinging iginawad niya rito. Kindred spirit siguro niya ito. Isang artist.
Napangiti ito. “Opo.”
“Ng?”
“Romance novels.”
“Wow!” Napataas ang kilay niya in appreciation.
“What was that for?” usisa niya.
Takes me about two weeks para matapos ang isang novel na nasa hundred fifty pages.”
“And now?” untag niya.
Nagkibit-balikat ito. “The other day lang nag-pass ako ng manuscript. Huli akong nagpasa more than a month ago pa.

oh, and, i’ve a surprise for everyone for this. hihi! but i’ll let you guys in on it later on. 🙂

No greater gift has man than to lay down his life for love….

November 5, 2012 • Leave a Comment

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

~ Chief Tecumseh (Poem from Act of Valor the Movie)

I just want to say… i love this film.
